It played a part in military operations such as the Gulf War, Afghanistan conflict and Iraq missions.

During the 1991 Gulf War, F 15s and F 16s from the Air Force were responsible for maintaining no fly zones and ensuring stability in the region.
In the War in Afghanistan (OEF A) their aircraft supported ground forces targeted terrorists and disrupted Taliban strongholds.
In the Iraq War (OIF) A 10 Thunderbolts from the Air Force provided air support while their intelligence assets aided operational success.
The designation of 9 AF resurfaced through a lineage transfer to USAFCENT (United States Air Forces Central Command) in 2009.
On August 20 2020 USAFCENT regained its designation as 9 AF marking a milestone in its history.
