VFA 213, known as The Blacklions has a history dating back to 1955 when it was established as Naval Fighter Squadron 213 (VF 213) at NAS Moffett Field in California.
The squadrons initial deployment was on the USS Bon Homme Richard, where they flew the F2H Banshee before transitioning to the F4D Skyray for deployments on the USS Lexington. Throughout the years VF 213 underwent changes by incorporating aircraft and missions.
During the Vietnam War era VFA 213 was part of Attack Carrier Air Wing 11 (CVW 11). Completed nine deployments to Vietnam and the Western Pacific aboard the USS Kitty Hawk. Their F 4Bs were involved in combat situations facing antiaircraft fire and enemy aircraft. Notable events include ejections and rescues well as their participation in shooting down two Vietnam Peoples Air Force Antonov An 2 aircraft using AIM 7 Sparrow missiles.
In 1971 VFA 213 achieved a milestone by becoming the fleet squadron to log over 1,000 hours of flight time with the Phantom within a single month. In 2006 The Blacklions were re designated as VFA 213. Transitioned to operating the F/A 18F Super Hornet. They continued to innovate by leading advancements, in tactics and procedures including utilizing radar systems.
The emblem of the squadron symbolizes pride and meaning. It features a figure named "Brutus" holding a rocket paying homage to the original VB 74 logo. The eleven stars grouped as seven and four represent the squadrons numerical identifier, "SEVEN FOUR." The shield commemorates the squadrons sixteen-year connection, with the Crusader aircraft.
Their motto "Fortune Favors the Bold" (translated from Latin as "Audentes Fortuna Juvat") epitomizes their bravery, resolve and preparedness. The patch unites the members of Blacklions highlighting their shared goals and dedication to excellence.
